Discord chat launches on PlayStation but there’s a catch

  • Integration for Discord Voice Chat has launched for PlayStation 5 players enrolled in the beta.
  • Voice Chat will now be easily accessible after a short series of steps and linking to a mobile app.
  • The feature and other new additions by Sony are currently only available in the US, Canada, Japan, the UK, Germany and France with a wider release possible in the near future.

Testers on the latest beta version of PlayStation 5 (PS5) software will now be able to make Discord voice calls directly from the console, according to a new blog post from Sony.

Integration with the popular chat platform has been a long-requested feature by players. Sony’s recent addition lags behind rival Microsoft who first launched Discord on Xbox devices in a similar approach in July 2022.

Right now only PS5 users from the US, Canada, Japan, the UK, Germany and France who are lucky enough to receive a beta access code from Discord to their email addresses will be able to access Voice Chat on their console. Once you receive the code, you will use it to install the beta system software.

To join a Discord Voice Chat on PS5, users on the beta will need to link their Discord and PlayStation Network accounts on the console following a set of steps.

First, head towards Settings > Users and Accounts > Linked Services.

Once you select the Discord button in Linked Services, you will be directed to a QR code so that you can link your PS5 to your Discord app on mobile.

Once linked you can begin using Discord Voice Chat on your PS5.

Sony notes that if you have already linked your PlayStation and Discord accounts in the past, you will still need to link the accounts again to gain access to Discord Voice Chat.

In the same blog post, Sony announced a number of social-focused additions to the PS5 software for beta participants, including the ability to share a screen with your friends, access a new “Join Game” icon in Party Chats, and enjoy new game hubs where you can see which of your friends are online and what games they are playing.

Other updates include the ability to manually upload game captures to the PlayStation App on mobile, and access to variable refresh rate support for 1440P, among myriad others that can be seen here.

It is likely that Discord Voice Chat integration and the others features will be made public to all players in other regions as the beta-phase winds down.
