YouTube head Susan Wojcicki is stepping down

  • After nine years at YouTube as its CEO Susan Wojcicki is stepping down.
  • Neal Mohan will take over the position following a transition period.
  • Wojcicki is stepping down to focus on family, personal projects and her health.

There are some folks in the tech space who are part of the landscape in Silicon Valley and one of those people is Susan Wojcicki.

The chief executive officer at YouTube has announced that she is seeking greener pastures after nine years in the position and a total of 25 years at Google.

“Over the years, I’ve worn many hats and done so many things: managed marketing, co-created Google Image Search, led Google’s first Video and Book search, as well as early parts of AdSense’s creation, worked on the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions, served as SVP [senior vice president] of Ads, and for the last nine years, the CEO of YouTube,” Wojcicki wrote to YouTube employees on Thursday.

The outgoing CEO says she has made the decision to leave to focus on her family, health and personal projects.

Taking over from Wojcicki will be Neal Mohan who will serve as both YouTube’s new CEO and its senior vice president. The pair have worked together in some capacity for 15 years and Mohan became the chief product officer at YouTube in 2015.

“For all the YouTubers I’ve had the privilege to work with, you have done so much to make this platform better over the years. You created the largest creative economy the world has ever seen, enabled entirely new forms of art and storytelling, and supported millions of creators and artists to reach new audiences—all while investing in responsible growth so that this brilliant community of creators, artists, viewers, and advertisers could not only co-exist but thrive together. Thank you,” Wojcicki added.

It truly is the end of an era for Wojcicki but whether this is a good or bad thing is an unknown quantity at this stage but we doubt that Mohan will enter the picture and make sweeping changes.

To that end, Wojcicki will help Mohan during a transition period and will continue to serve as an advisor to Google and Alphabet.

A number of creators have wished Wojcicki well in her future endeavours. This includes former Twitch Golden Boy Ludwig Ahgren who YouTube lured over with a better contract than Twitch could offer. Of course, ever the businessman, Ahgren was quick to reach out Mohan to organise a chat.
