How to watch this year’s Best Picture in South Africa

  • Everything Everywhere All At Once won a record seven awards at this year’s Oscars held last evening, including Best Picture.
  • The film, although not a box office juggernaut, is a critical success and holds a “Must Watch” rating on Metacritic.
  • There aren’t too many options to find and watch the film in South Africa, so your best bet will be Amazon Prime Video and in select Ster-Kinekor theatres.

The 95th Academy Awards were held last evening, and we can now confirm they were 99.9 percent slap free. Instead of Smith Family Drama, this year was all about the movies, and the big winner was A24‘s Everything Everywhere All At Once, which steam-rolled all the other nominees to pick up a record seven Oscars.

These include Best Picture, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis, and Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan.

The film also scored Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing to round out its panoply of little golden dudes. The other big winner last evening was Netflix’ anti-war war film All Quiet on the Western Front scooping up four awards.

Despite Everything Everywhere All At Once being a critical darling (it is currently listed as a “Must Watch” by Metacritic), it was by far and away not the most commercially successful film to feature at the award show.

Instead, it beat out money-making machines Top Gun: Maverick and Avatar: The Way of Water in a few categories like Best Picture, and Best Editing.

If you are one of the many who have not yet stopped for two hours to watch this year’s best film, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, we have taken it upon ourselves to compile some options.

Unfortunately, there aren’t too many places where you can catch the film in South Africa. Streaming will probably be your best bet, but it isn’t available on Netflix, or Apple TV.

Amazon Prime Video is the only streaming platform where you can find Everything Everywhere All At Once locally, as of the time of writing. The platform is currently offering a 7-day free trial too, so if you want to check out the film for free, you can do so that way.

Otherwise, the monthly subscription is priced at a competitive R79.

If you still want to catch the film on the big screen, you can find showings of this year’s Best Picture still going at Ster Kinekor Nouveau theatres in Gauteng and the Western Cape.

These include Brooklyn Commercial Ster Kenikor in Pretoria, as well as theatres in Cresta and The Zone at Rosebank in Johannesburg. In the Western Cape, the film is showing at Ster Kinekors at Cavendish, Tygervalley and the V&A.

If you are in the Western Cape, but feel like Ster Kinekor is too commercial for your blood, why not head down to the Labia Independent Theatre in Cape Town, where Everything Everywhere All At Once is still showing.

Everything Everywhere All At Once, which debuted in 2022, is a completely original story and sees Michelle Yeoh’s Evelyn Yang, an exhausted Chinese-American woman sucked into a universe and time-bending romp where she lives every possible life she could ever have.

Critics say the film is hilarious, heartfelt and defies genre. Check out its trailer below.
