Tweets could soon be 10 000 characters long

  • Elon Musk has teased that Twitter could allow tweets with up 10 000 characters soon.
  • This as Twitter Blue subscribers wait on official news of advertising revenue sharing.
  • A tweet with 10 000 characters would be almost five times the length of this news story.

Could this news story fit into a tweet? If we were Twitter Blue subscribers, we absolutely could. Right now Twitter Blue offers subscribers the ability to send tweets up to 4 000 characters long but soon that could ramp up to 10 000 characters.

This is according to Chief Twit and billionaire owner of the once micro-blogging platform, Elon Musk.

At the weekend a developer asked Musk fro the ability to add code blocks to tweets. In response, Musk said, “We are extending long form tweets to 10k soon”.

We suppose that some folks may find the ability to send 10 000 character long tweets appealing but we have to ask, to what end?

Despite saying monetisation was coming for Twitter Blue users, no further details have been made available to those subscribers. There isn’t even mention of revenue sharing on the Twitter Blue product page. Until this perk arrives however, there isn’t much of a carrot to lure creators to using the platform over the many other options – which feature the ability to monetise content – available.

There’s also that matter that creators would need to pay Twitter in order to access the features they’d need to create content. Asking a creator to pay $8 to upload 60-minute video, when YouTube, Rumble and many other platforms offer this for free.

It all just feels very odd and almost as if Musk doesn’t have a clear idea of what he wants to do with Twitter.

While the billionaire has said that he wants to turn Twitter into an “everything app” like China’s WeChat, that goal is some three to five years from completion.

As Ars Technica detailed last week, Musk wants to turn Twitter into a financial powerhouse in the US and it has made steps in that direction. However, while Musk builds that in the background, he also needs to be aware of Twitter’s reputation.

Right now the platform is incredible buggy and prone to sudden outages. Last week users weren’t able to see content from people they followed for over an hour. That’s not inspiring us to use Twitter for payments or even to put anything we care about on the platform whether that’s a 10 000 character tweet or a video.

There’s also no word on whether these gargantuan tweets Musk is teasing would have an sort of formatting tools. The owner has previously said these tools are coming but as to when is unclear.

Even with formatting however, we don’t see ourselves scrolling through 10 000 characters which would be almost five times the length of this news story.
