Twitter Blue arrives in SA for a lot more than a Netflix sub

  • Twitter Blue is now available in South Africa.
  • The verification service which includes access to additional features starts at R144.99 per month.
  • Taking up a subscription via the Apple App Store or Google Play Store will cost R200.

After many months, Twitter’s subscription service – Twitter Blue – is now available in South Africa.

Pricing is rather drastic with a subscription taken up on via the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store costing R200 per month or R2 099 per year. Subscribing on the Twitter website will cost R144.99 per month or R1 519 per year. That’s a lot of money for not all that much value. Sure you get access to some additional features but at the end of the day, it’s still just Twitter.

This subscription comes with the blue verification check as well as a few additional features. These features include:

  • Bookmark folders
  • Custom app icons
  • NFT Profile Pictures
  • Themes
  • Custom navigation bar
  • Spaces tab
  • Top Articles
  • Reader
  • Undo Tweet
  • Edit Tweet
  • Prioritised rankings in conversations
  • Upload videos 2GB in size
  • Tweets up to 4 000 characters long
  • SMS two-factor authentication

It’s not clear whether all of these features will be available in South Africa. Indeed one of the draw cards for many would be the removal of advertising but Twitter Blue will only remove half of the adverts you’d normally see. We should point out that the ad-removal feature isn’t even available yet.

One other feature of Twitter Blue is the ability to earn a share of advertising revenue from ads in reply threads. This feature was said to be rolling out in February but details about this are scant.

At a minimum of R144.99, Twitter Blue is rather pricey. By comparison, a Basic subscription for Netflix is R99 per month, even YouTube Premium, which includes YouTube Music, only costs R71.99 per month.

For those who still feel like Twitter is worth that price, we highly recommend you read through the FAQ page to fully understand what it is you’re buying.

At the end of your day it’s your money and at least the service is now available to those who want a blue tick, even if it doesn’t mean all that much more than you have R144.99 per month to burn.
