Don’t pay R500 for PRIME, Checkers is bringing it to South Africa for R39.99

  • South Africans have been left shocked at the cost of PRIME over the last few months with some retailers charging over R500 per bottle.
  • Now Checkers has announced it’s bringing the drink to its stores on 1st May.
  • Buyers will be limited to eight 500ml bottles per day with each bottle priced at R39.99.

For months South Africans have been experiencing price gouging for a drink. That drink is PRIME, an energy/hydration drink from the minds of YouTubers Logan Paul and Olajide Olayinka Williams Olatunji (KSI).

The energy drink claims to be 10 percent coconut water and packed with B vitamins, electrolytes and anti-oxidants. Having never tasted the drink we can’t comment on whether it’s good but we know Paul and KSI are incredibly popular and that’s led to folks being gouged by local retailers.

It’s not uncommon to find a bottle of Prime for R500. Speaking to a staffer at a local retailer we learned that it sold one bottle of the drink for that price after a customer’s child opened the bottle, forcing the customer to pay the ridiculous asking price.

With that background out of the way, Checkers has announced that it will be selling PRIME from 1st May. The retailer even brought Paul on board to announce the launch.

In response to a question, Checkers said that customers on its Sixty60 app would be able to purchase the drink but would be limited to purchasing eight bottles per day. Importantly, stocks are incredibly limited.

Further to this, the retailer says that PRIME will be available at Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores in Western Cape, Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

This is good news though, especially for fans of energy drinks like us. While R39.99 is rather high for a 500ml energy drink, it’s better than the R500 some retailers are still charging.
