The God of War Ragnarok New Game Plus is now available

  • The New Game Plus (NG+) update for God of War Ragnarok is now available for PS5 players to download.
  • Among the new elements are a new level cap, enhancements to gameplay, and cosmetic changes for armour.
  • The endgame bosses have also been tinkered with to provide more of a challenge.

If you have been hankering for more God of War Ragnarok content, you’re in luck as Santa Monica Studio has made the New Game Plus (NG+) update available to those with a PS5.

New Game Plus brings with it several enhancements to what is an already impressive game, with PlayStation detailing all of them in a recent blog post.

“New equipment, an increased level cap, new Enchantments – all this and more is introduced with God of War Ragnarök’s NG+ mode. As soon as you’ve beaten the game, you’ll be able to dive right into a NG+ save to experience the story again with many more gameplay options available from the start,” explains Santa Monica’s Grace Orlady.

“Your equipment, weapons (including the Draupnir Spear), and skills will carry over from your previous save, so you’ll be able to use your entire arsenal from the beginning of your journey,” she adds.

If you’re thinking that bringing across weapons and armour from a previous save will make things easier, Orlady also notes that, “You will not start the game with access to Sonic and Hex arrows. All areas requiring either those arrows or the Draupnir Spear to access will not unlock until you have reached the point in the main questline in which they become available via the story.”

Looking at the other elements that have been added to New Game Plus, there will be a new Black Bear armour set (seen in the left portion of the header image), which adds the bad ass coat that Kratos wears during the opening sequence of the game.

This armour will be equipped from the beginning of NG+, with its stats focusing on strength and defence, as well as offering a perk that rewards your last-second evades with a volley of Bifröst shards.

There is also a stripped down version of armour for those that want a real challenge.

“If you want a serious test of your skills and to take on the toughest challenge you can get in God of War Ragnarök, the Spartan Armor is for you. With no Perk, no Stats, and locked at Power Level 1 – the Spartan Armor lets you take a more… well, spartan approach towards protection,” adds Orlady.

Added to this will be the Ares and Zeus armours from the 2018 title.

Lastly the Spartan Aspis returns in God of War Ragnarok as a new shield option and displays the Spartan symbol in red.

Onto some of the gameplay elements and endgame bosses, namely the Berserkers and Valkyrie Queen Gná, have received some enhancements too. The developers hint at an increase in difficulty, but remains to be seen what new challenge they will present.

“The Hateful and the Ormstunga, two of our optional mini-bosses, have been given a few new tricks. Be sure to pay them a visit when you can in your NG+ run,” Orlady also points out.

In terms of other aspects to the gameplay, there are now Platinum Tier labours to complete, along with stat gains via Yggdrasil Dew, and a Black and White mode for those who want to experience something a little more Kurosawa-inspired.

The final element is the ability to skip cinematic scenes. Some players found them to be excessive, but it’s one of the aspects we truly love about Ragnarok and the 2018 game.
