Braking Point returns in F1 23

  • EA Sports has announced that F1 23 will return on 16th June for all platforms except the Nintendo Switch.
  • The game sees the return of the fantastic Braking Point career mode with what appears to be inspiration from Drive to Survive.
  • F1 23 will also feature the Las Vegas and Lusail Circuits, as well as the first time implementation of the Red Flag rule.

Ahead of this weekend’s Miami Grand Prix, EA Sports has announced that the next iteration of the F1 games arrives on 16th June.

As per an announcement, F1 23 will arrive for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via EA App, Epic Games Store, and Steam. The cover for this year’s game features seven time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris. Current World Champion, Max Verstappen will feature on the Digital Champions Edition.

That Digital Champions Edition is worth a look as it not only gives you access to 18 000 PitCoin (in-game currency) you also get three days of early access to the game starting on 13th June.

Perhaps most exciting is the return of Braking Point.

Introduce in F1 2021 – and then skipped for F1 2022 – Braking Point is a story mode that includes the trials and tribulations that take place both on and off track during an F1 season.

Players will once again race as Aiden Jackson who is this time racing for Konnersport Racing Team against rival, Devon Butler. This story mode seems to be taking a Netflix, Drive to Survive approach if the trailer is anything to go by.

As you can infer from the trailer above, a new feature for F1 23 is the inclusion of red flags. This means that races will be stopped and restarted should there be a particularly nasty or problematic prang on track. While a red flag has a noticeable effect on racing in the real world, we do wonder how well it will work in a game setting.

EA is also talking up a new technology it’s calling Precision Drive Technology which is said to give more precision and finesse to controller users.

As you might expect, the new tracks including Las Vegas and Qatar’s Lusail Circuit will also be available to race at in F1 23.

“We are delighted to continue working with EA Sports on creating the latest F1 game for the 2023 season. F1 23 is another way in which we are able to give gamers and fans an additional way to enjoy and engage with the sport and a first-hand experience of being behind the wheel,” said Managing Director of Commercial at Formula 1, Brandon Snow said in a statement.

Given that F1 2022 didn’t feature Braking Point we’re hoping that a year gap was enough time to refine the story and make what was a good first attempt a fantastic second go.

We’re quite looking forward to spending Youth Day this year finding the grip in F1 23.
