Twitter expanding Community Notes to tackle AI-generated images

  • In a bid to fight “misleading media” on its platform, Twitter is testing out Community Notes as a way to identify AI-generated images.
  • Community Notes will be able to add additional context, as well as appear on images which match the original misleading one.
  • It may help when it comes to the viral spread of doctored images, such as Trump’s faked arrest.

AI-generated images bring with it countless possibilities, but they are certainly not without their problems. Outside of ownership they are presenting a problem for social media platforms like Twitter, which is why the company is expanding the capabilities of its Community Notes feature.

In a tweet, Twitter confirmed that Community Notes can now be attached to what it terms as “misleading media”. It should also be noted that this is a test for now, but it could receive a wider rollout if successful in curbing the misleading media.

“From AI-generated images to manipulated videos, it’s common to come across misleading media. Today we’re piloting a feature that puts a superpower into contributors’ hands: Notes on Media. Notes attached to an image will automatically appear on recent & future matching images,” it explained.

As such, this could potentially help in adding more context to images that go viral, and in particular AI-generated ones. We saw earlier this year for example a series of faked images showing former US President Donald Trump being arrested, with several reputable news outlets running with the story as a legitimate one when that turned out not to be the case.

While Twitter did not create the faked images, the fact that it spread so quickly over its platform is a problem, and one that it is now trying to address via Community Notes.

As Engadget points out, this feature is not perfect and errors do occur, so hopefully Twitter has other plans in place to curb the spread of potentially damaging AI-generated images outside of replying on its community to do the hard work.
