Upcoming Samsung Galaxy foldables get launch date

  • Samsung is expected to reveal its upcoming foldable devices the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 on 26th July 2023 at an Unpacked event held in Seoul, South Korea.
  • According to a report from South Korean publication The Chosun Ilbo, Samsung has moved up the reveal date of the devices in order to address an ever-competitive foldables market.
  • Not much else is known about the devices, other than what rumours and leaks indicate.

We have a better idea now when Samsung’s upcoming foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5, will be officially revealed. According to a report from respected South Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo, the Z Fold5 and Z Flip5 will be revealed in Seoul on 26th July 2023.

The publication cites industry insiders who claim that Samsung will host an Unpacked event in Seoul in July where it will showcase the new Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5.

Usually, Samsung unveils its foldables in August, having done so on 10th August last year, and 11th August in 2021. The schedules for the reveals have apparently been moved up a few weeks with Samsung hoping to keep its position as the “world’s number one” in foldables.

This makes sense as since the company opened the foldables floodgate, several other manufacturers like Huawei, OPPO and HONOR have been furiously rushing for a piece of the folding smartphone market share pie.

The fact that Samsung is launching the devices in South Korea is also a big change. Previous iterations were announced at events held in the US, specifically in New York and San Francisco.

Chosun Ilbo’s report also indicates that one of the new foldables will be in stores from 11th August 2023, after the 26th July event. Nothing else is officially known about the devices. However, there are rumours aplenty of what the new devices will bring.

According to The Verge, the Z Fold5 could be thinner and flatter than previous models when in folded-mode, thanks to a smaller hinge gap. The device is also rumoured to have the same screen size of the Z Fold4, but with smaller screen bezels.

Meanwhile, leaks indicate that the Z Flip5 could have a larger cover screen size compared to the previous iteration.

We can expect both of the devices to come to the local market, as Samsung has been consistent with its foldable releases in South Africa. We reviewed the Galaxy Z Flip4 last year in September and found it to be a high-powered and aesthetically pleasing smartphone, but its asking price may be a bit steep for some customers.
