The billionaire nerds will never actually fight

  • Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have traded barbs on their respective social media about a potential MMA cage fight.
  • The Verge has seemingly confirmed that Zuckerberg is serious about fighting Musk, while Musk has tweeted that he is also serious.
  • Despite this, an actual fight between the two would be a sad display and will most likely not happen.

Before the tech world gets ready to rumble, it is highly unlikely that Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg will have a pay-per-view Las Vegas MMA cage fight. If you’re thinking “Well, duh” then maybe we should catch you up.

The two tech heavyweights with an estimated combined net worth of $333 billion have seemingly agreed to fight on TV through a series of social media posts, but nothing official has been set in stone.

According to The Verge, who scooped this up, Elon Musk tweeted that he was “up for a cage match” against the Meta CEO.

Emboldened by a rivalry over their social media firms, Musk who paid billions for Twitter last year, once tweeted “Zuck my @#&%” in response to a news story about how Zuckerberg plans to “kill off Twitter.”

Meanwhile, Zuckerberg said on a recent podcast that he would like to see a Twitter that was “sanely run,” poking fun at Musk’s many eccentricities during his turn as chief executive of the Blue Bird. Musk, seemingly always online, responded to this too.

It seems Zuckerberg caught wind of Musk’s challenge and responded on Instagram, one of his own social platforms, as he does not have an official Twitter account.

Zuckerberg responded with “Send Me Location” on Instagram. Sourced from The Verge.

The ominous reply was sent by users back to Musk, who set the location as “Vegas Octagon.” The Verge says it has confirmed that Zuckerberg is serious about fighting Musk in a cage, and according to his latest posts, it seems Musk is too.

While Musk is the taller man, and has a reach advantage, he gives away the age advantage to Zuckeberg, who is 12 years his junior. Both men would be old by fighter standards. In the UFC, most fighters end their careers before the age of 30.

And while Zuckerberg is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu white belt – a green stick beginner – he does have some martial arts training over Musk, who only has “real hard-core street fights” under his belt during his private school tenures in the mean streets of Pretoria.

We’re not saying a street fighter can’t go up against a martial artist – RIP Kimbo Slice – but if they actually got in the octagon, it would be a slow, sad display.

Despite this, featuring two of the wealthiest men in the world and household names in a novel concept – the fight would be a huge box office draw. And promoters are lining up. Influencer and boxer Jake Paul has thrown his hat into the mix, saying that the fight could be for charity

Amateur charity boxing exhibitions have become quite popular as of late, with YouTuber iDubbbz hosting two successful Creator Clash events in the last two years. These pit internet influencers against each other, and some of the fights are good, and some are downright terrible displays. Either way, iDubbz has stated that he was able to donate “close to a million dollars” to charity after the original Clash.

Elon Musk v. Mark Zuckerberg headlining a card will do much more. However, the likelihood of this happening is very unlikely, despite what they say.

For starters, both men run multiple billion-dollar companies and have no time to actually train for a fight. It is reported that Musk in particular works 80 to 100-hour workweeks, split between his companies focused mostly on engineering and design work.

Zuckerberg has a lighter schedule and seems to be spending around 60 hours a week on work-related responsibilities, which is pretty reasonable. However, this is before Meta had to go “all hands on deck” after laying off 21 000 employees due to the poor global markets.

On top of this, a fight between the two men would be an embarrassing display, the likes of which those who partake of it will never soon forget. Fighters, either for MMA or boxing, have to undergo months if not years of conditioning to last any semblance of time in the ring.

The Musk v. Zuckerberg fight would be ten minutes of two blown-up tech titans, flushing crimson and sopping in sweat, ambling around an octagon festooned with brands, straining to throw the occasional jab as their loose flesh jiggles.

It would be like watching a car crash, and the hideous display of two men aspired after by millions around the globe in such a state would be another solidifier of our decrepit society.
