• The provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal is launching its own campaign to match people with employment.
• On Youth Day Gauteng launched its Nasi I’Spani job drive, promising thousands of new opportunities to residents.
• For KZN, the new jobs will be in the transport sector as the campaign is being driven by the provincial Department of Transport.

Hot on the heels of Gauteng’s “Nasi i’Spani” youth jobs fair launched on Youth Day 16th June, the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) says it is preparing its own job creation initiative, dubbed “S’thesha Waya-Waya” or “working throughout.”

According to the official Twitter account for the provincial government, the initiative is set to launch on Thursday 29th June 2023 at 12:00. The campaign will launch at the Curries Fountain sports development centre in Greyville, Durban.

The KZN Department of Transport is heading this particular drive, which has already seen more than 6 000 young people employed by the Department of Transport and the Community Safety and Liaison, according to SA News.

Other than this, local government hasn’t included much information on how one begins to apply for the jobs, and what is required for applications, however, it has said that the new jobs will be in the transport sector, in line with the provincial Department of Transport.

“The launch will pull more than 6 000 participants who are part of initiatives, such as Vukayibambe Routine Road Maintenance Programme [VRRMP], National Youth Services, Road Safety Ambassadors, Walking Bus (road safety crossing), Social Crime Prevention Programme, graduate interns and law graduates,” the department explained.

KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube says that the initiative marks a new aggressive shift towards doing rather than saying.

“We are of the view that in our province we need to drive a hybrid approach of keeping conventional jobs while implementing strategies that will aggressively shift the youth’s efforts towards creating marketable opportunities for themselves,” she said, quoted by Independent Media.

“The time for never-ending meetings about meetings is over now, we are turning the tide against the unemployment of our people. I am captivated but equally gripped by emotions because I have a line of sight over KZN that is working, both young and old.”

Unemployment in South Africa continues to be a plague among young adults, with the latest quarterly jobs survey from Statistics South Africa pointing to a downturn in employed people. Total unemployment decreases by 1 percent, or 97 000 between March 2022 and March 2023.

Despite this, those that were unemployed enjoyed an increase in year-on-year gross earnings by around 5 percent or R43.2 billion in that same period.
