Mastercard and PayU launch Click to Pay in SA for online payments sans card details

  • Mastercard has launched Click to Pay in South Africa thanks to a partnership with PayU.
  • Click to Pay is described as a next-generation ecommerce technology that facilitates online payments without the need for entering card credentials.
  • PayU is also the first payment service provider to launch Click to Pay in SA.

Mastercard has announced a partnership with service provider PayU to launch Click to Pay in South Africa.

Described as a next-generation ecommerce technology, Click to Pay, allows consumers to shop online securely without having to input their card credentials or store sensitive information across different merchant platforms.

“The launch of Click to Pay is the latest initiative demonstrating Mastercard’s commitment to growing the ecosystem through various digital payment options, offering increased security and peace of mind for everyone, everywhere,” noted Mastercard in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“Click to Pay is an open standard from EMV Secure Remote Commerce standard for eCommerce / Card Not Present guest checkout transactions, and delivers a more consistent and convenient checkout experience for consumers, reducing the multiple steps they face at different sites today,” added Karen Nadasen, CEO of PayU Africa.

First time Click to Pay users will be able to enroll their cards on the pop-up window on the PayU platform, while those who already stored their cards in their profile will have access to the new checkout experience. These consumers will see their cards appear for selection, as opposed to being hidden away behind a button, pop-up, or redirect process, says Mastercard.

“Click to Pay has already launched in five markets – UAE, KSA, Qatar, Kuwait, and now South Africa, and is set to launch in many more markets within the coming year and currently almost half of all Click to Pay checkouts on purchases are performed by returning users,” highlighted Gabriel Swanepoel, country manager at Mastercard for Southern Africa.
