Netflix wants the world to know how awful you are

  • Following on from last week’s release of season six of Black Mirror, Netflix has created a landing page for the fake streaming service Streamberry.
  • The platform also created a website called You Are Awful that allows you to upload an image of yourself.
  • It is also asking people to let others know on social media just how awful they are with the hashtag #YouAreAwful.

Last week Netflix released the highly anticipated season six of Black Mirror. The first episode, titled Joan is Awful, was a rather interesting one as it featured a fictitious streaming service called Streamberry, which looked a lot like Netflix.

In usual Black Mirror fashion, things take a sadistic turn in the episode, and now leaning in on the viral nature of the show, Netflix has created a landing page in homage to Streamberry.

Along with featuring a number of fake shows utilising images from other Netflix originals, the landing page has another site embedded within called You Are Awful. By clicking on the Make Me Awful button on the Streamberry page, you are redirected to a new website that allows you to create “your own” show inspired by what happens in the Joan is Awful episode.

From there you can upload an image of yourself, or perhaps someone else you think is awful. You’ll also need to plug in your first name, along with agreeing to allow Netflix to potentially use said image in its promotional material.

Once all of that is done, you will see said image in a series featuring your name, along with being prompted to share the creation on social media with the hashtag #YouAreAwful.

While this is a little bit of harmless fun, and likely won’t lead to more people watching the anxiety-inducing Black Mirror, it is at least pleasing to see that Netflix is self-aware, and leaning into the joke.
