The Porsche Mission X is an all-electric hypercar inspired by Le Mans

  • This week Porsche unveiled the Mission X, an all-electric hypercar.
  • The Mission X is a concept car for now, celebrating 75 years of Porsche sports cars and inspired in part by the Le Mans races.
  • The hypercar remains a concept for now, with no indication on whether Porsche will ever fully develop it.

This week Porsche is celebrating 75 years of its rich sports car and racing heritage, and to mark the occasion, the German carmaker has revealed a new concept car in the form of the Mission X.

This “hypercar” as Porsche terms it is all-electric in nature, although the company has not disclosed plans about making a fully-fledged offering to the public.

That said it is still quite the object d’art, and features elements from past iconic Porsche, as well as an electric powertrain, which the company views as a way of paying homage to the past, along with looking to the future.

“The Porsche Mission X is a technology beacon for the sports car of the future. It picks up the torch of iconic sports cars of decades past: like the 959, the Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder before it, the Mission X provides critical impetus for the evolutionary development of future vehicle concepts,” explained Oliver Blume, chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG.

“The Mission X is a clear commitment to the core of the brand. The continuing, enhanced expression of our brand and product identity is an important compass for us to navigate the development of our series-production models. The concept study symbolises a symbiosis of unmistakable motorsport DNA with a luxurious overall impression,” added Michael Mauer, head of Style Porsche, at a reveal event for the concept car.

In terms of dimensions, it measures 4.5 metres long and two metres wide. It also has a wheelbase of 2.73 metres, which is similar to the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder. “For aerodynamic purposes, the concept car has mixed-size tyres, with 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear,” the carmaker noted.

You’ll also spot the unique door opening mechanism, which is said to serve as a nod to Le Mans-style race cars. “The Le Mans-style doors are attached to the A-pillar and the roof; they open forwards and upwards. This type of door was previously used on the legendary Porsche 917 racing car,” the company continued.

For now, there is no indication of what kind of speeds or performance the Mission X could muster, as it is still a concept, but if it did ever go into production, Porsche has teased some potential capabilities.

To that end, it says the Porsche Mission X would be:

  • “Be the fastest road-legal vehicle around the Nürburgring Nordschleife;
  • Have a power-to-weight ratio of roughly one PS per kilogram;
  • Achieve downforce values that are well in excess of those delivered by the current 911 GT3 RS;
  • Offer significantly improved charging performance with its 900-volt system architecture and charge roughly twice as quickly as Porsche’s current frontrunner, the Taycan Turbo S.”

For the moment all we can do is fawn over this beautiful-looking concept, but hopefully Porsche does indeed plan to go into production with it at some stage.
