Watch Wall Street sweat in trailer for Dumb Money

  • Dumb Money, the film about WallStreetBets gets a star-studded trailer.
  • The film stars Paul Dano as Keith Gill with appearances by Nick Offerman, Seth Rogan, and Pete Davidson.
  • Dumb Money hits cinemas on 22nd September.

At the height of the pandemic, Reddit served as the battleground for a fight between hedge funds and so-called day traders.

As you might recall, millions of users on r/WallStreetBets began buying stock from GameStop, inflating the price. For hedge funds which had shorted the stock in hopes that the ailing retailer’s stock price would continue to descend, it was a terrible time.

Now that whole saga has been made into a film in Dumb Money that is set to hit theatres in September.

The film tells the story of Keith Gill who shared his investments on r/WallStreetBets and led a run on the purchase of stocks in GameStop, AMC and others.

The film stars Paul Dano as Gill, Sebastian Stan as Vlad Tenev, Seth Rogen as Gabe Plotkin. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie who has worked on Pam & Tommy, Cruella, I, Tonya and Lars and the Real Girl.

“Dumb Money is the ultimate David vs. Goliath tale, based on the insane true story of everyday people who flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop (yes, the mall videogame store) into the world’s hottest company. In the middle of everything is regular guy Keith Gill (Paul Dano), who starts it all by sinking his life savings into the stock and posting about it. When his social posts start blowing up, so does his life and the lives of everyone following him. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets rich – until the billionaires fight back, and both sides find their worlds turned upside down,” reads a blurb for the film.

Since the events in 2021, MassMutual who employed Gill was ordered to pay a $4 million fine as part of a settlement for failing to supervise his and the trades of others. Gill executed trades on behalf of himself and three other people without MassMutual’s knowledge.

We’re quite excited to give this a watch, especially with Paul Dano in the leading role.

Dumb Money arrives in cinemas in the US on 22nd September.
