You’ll soon fly an ornithopter on Arrakis in Flight Simulator

  • Microsoft announced Flight Simulator 2024 and a Dune-related expansion at the Xbox Games Showcase last night.
  • The Dune expansion will allow players to pilot a House Atreides ornithopter, as well as explore the desert planet of Arrakis.
  • The expansion will be available on 3rd November 2023.

Ever wonder what it is like to pilot an ornithopter from Dune? Well you will soon have the chance to do just that as Microsoft announced an expansion for Flight Simulator that ties into the world created by Frank Herbert.

This has been made possible thanks to a partnership with Warner Bros. to build up even more hype for Dune: Part Two, which lands in cinemas come 3rd November. The expansion will also be accessible in Flight Simulator on the same date, with players capable of exploring the desert planet of Arrakis.

It’s unclear how much of the planet will be accessible, but the trailer below does show a few shots of the ornithopter as it travels over mountain ranges likely inhabited by Fremen, along with flying past spice harvesters.

Along with the expansion, there is a new iteration of Flight Simulator to look forward to. Flight Simulator 2024 was also announced during last night’s Xbox Games Showcase. At the time of writing, no specific date has been mentioned, with Xbox slapping a broad 2024 release on it.

“Coming 2024 – the next generation of the legendary franchise. Join the aviation adventure in a groundbreaking simulator developed for Xbox Series X|S and PC,” reads the description for the YouTube video of the announcement, featured below.

While we await a release date, we do know that Flight Simulator 2024 will focus on some of the other professions and industries related to flight. To that end, you will be able to try out aviation firefighting, construction, airfreight, air racing, and more.

As such, it looks like the extensive elements that Flight Simulator already had, are about to get even deeper.
