All hands on deck for generative AI at Amazon

  • Amazon CEO Andy Jassy held an earnings call recently, highlighting the efforts that the company is making when it comes to generative AI.
  • He confirmed that every Amazon business has multiple teams working on generative AI projects.
  • The projects range from improving cost-effectiveness at Amazon to enhancing the capabilities of Alexa.

If you had to play a drinking game for every time that generative AI has been mentioned in 2023 to date, you’d be on the floor pretty quickly. It is the new hotness that every technology company is chasing at the moment, and Amazon is no different.

This as the company’s CEO, Andy Jassy, highlighted the efforts that Amazon is making when it comes to generative AI during a recent earnings call.

To that end, he noted that all of the company’s businesses have multiple AI-related projects on the go.

“Every single one… [has] multiple generative AI initiatives going right now,” Jassy noted.

Amazon chasing the development of more generative AI solutions makes sense, especially given the businesses that fall under its portfolio.

As The Verge rightly points out, AWS for example, could leverage generative AI in a cloud ecosystem for its customers. Particularly as many businesses are looking at ways of integrating generative AI into their own environments, but may not have the time or money to invest that an organisation the size of AWS has.

It may also look to supercharge the functionality and capabilities of its Alexa digital assistant too, which is something that Google announced earlier this week for its own Assistant.

Speaking on the projects that the company has on the go, Jassy pointed out that, “They range from things that help us be more cost-effective and streamlined in how we run operations and various businesses, to the absolute heart of every customer experience in which we offer.”

“It’s true in our Stores business, it’s true in our AWS business, it’s true in our advertising business, it’s true in all our devices — and you can just imagine what we’re working on with respect to Alexa there — it’s true in our entertainment businesses… every single one. It is going to be at the heart of what we do. It’s a significant investment and focus for us,” he concluded.

What this increased focus on generative AI will mean for the company’s workforce remains to be seen, especially as many divisions and a large swathe of employees were laid off at the beginning of the year.

If Amazon were to announce new solutions or products, specifically for AWS, we could likely see them happen at its annual re:Invent conference at the end of the year.
