AWS opens international Skills Center in Cape Town

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced the opening of its first international Skills Center on the African continent.
  • The Skills Center is located in Cape Town, and will offer free foundational cloud training.
  • It is the third such Center of its kind, with AWS opening up ones in Seattle and Arlington, in the US.

Those interested in careers in cloud computing, or indeed wanting to gain valuable skills in the field, should take note of a recent announcement from Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The hyperscaler has announced the opening of its first Skills Center on the African continent, located in Cape Town, South Africa. The location makes a lot of sense, given that this is the same region where the company made its first data centres available locally back in 2018.

The Skills Center is the third of its kind globally, with AWS having opened up similar projects in Seattle and Arlington in the United States.

As for what it will make available, AWS explains that it is aimed at offering free foundational cloud training for individuals interested in cloud computing and its potential career opportunities.

“The facility features immersive exhibits demonstrating real-world cloud applications, live instructor-led training, and resources for earning an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification,” the hyperscaler noted in a press release sent to Hypertext.

“AWS is committed to removing barriers for people to access the skills training they need to grow their careers. The Cape Town region is ripe with talent, and upskilling the workforce can play a key role in driving innovation, catalyzing economic growth, and accelerating digital transformation across South Africa,” added Maureen Lonergan, VP for AWS Training and Certification.

Further unpacking some of the experiences for the Skills Center, AWS noted that it is designed to engage visitors by showcasing how cloud technology is powering technologies in different industries ranging from weather predictions to robotics.

Other experiences include:

  • “The Cloud Discovery Space includes eight immersive exhibits that reveal how the cloud supports space exploration, gaming, machine learning, cybersecurity, and more.
  • Both in-person and virtual participants can take live, instructor-led training from AWS experts to learn cloud computing fundamentals.
  • Learners can leverage training and resources to prepare to earn an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification, validating their skills and enhancing their employability with an industry-recognized credential.
  • The center also offers career coaching and hosts networking events with local employers and workforce development organizations to connect workers with job placement opportunities.”
