• Google has announced that applications are now open for its Startups Accelerator: AI First program.
• Applications close on 6th September, with African startups urged to apply.
• The Accelerator is looking for startups from 17 African countries including South Africa.

Google has announced the launch of a new initiative that will be of interest to African startups. This as the company’s Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First program is calling for applications.

As the name would suggest, this initiative is aimed at supporting African startups looking to use artificial intelligence to solve local challenges.

“This program recognises the transformative role that AI is playing across the world, innovating industries and reimagining the realms of possibilities. It also highlights the significant contributions of African startups in addressing some of the region’s most pressing challenges through the use of AI,” explains Google in a release sent to Hypertext.

The program is 10 weeks-long, inviting startups up to build Africa-centric solutions with AI and machine learning. Participants will gain access to Google’s AI expertise, technical resources which including up to $350 000 in Google Cloud Credits, as well as mentorship from AI professionals, and networking opportunities.

Google also notes that startups from 17 African countries will be eligible to apply for the program, with Algeria, Botswana, Cameroon, Côte D’ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, and Zimbabwe highlighted.

“Africa’s tech landscape is vibrant and ever-evolving. It’s inspiring to see African startups not only harnessing AI to address our unique challenges but also setting benchmarks for the world. ‘AI First’ is more than a program; it’s a testament to our belief in the vision of these startups, ensuring they have the support and guidance they need to realise their full potential,” adds Folarin Aiyegbusi, head of Startup Ecosystem for Africa at Google.
