Spotify rolls out AI DJ in South Africa

  • Spotify has announced that its personalisation AI DJ feature is rolling out locally starting today.
  • The feature is available in beta to Premium subscribers.
  • Since being announced at the beginning of the year, it has launched in the US, Canada, UK and Ireland.

Whatever your opinion of Spotify may be, the music streaming platform and its algorithm make new music discovery and recommendations better than most. Leveraging those capabilities, Spotify announced a personalised AI DJ feature at the beginning of the year, which has now been launched in South Africa.

Spotify confirmed in a release sent to Hypertext that the AI DJ feature will begin rolling out today to South African Premium subscribers via beta.

“Since launching in the US, Canada, UK and Ireland earlier this year, DJ has become the most discussed Spotify feature on social media, and we’re excited to bring it to South Africa today,” the platform noted of the rollout.

“DJ is a personalized AI guide that knows you and your music taste so well that it can choose what to play for you. This feature, first rolling out in beta, will deliver a curated lineup of music alongside commentary around the tracks and artists we think you’ll like in a stunningly realistic voice,” it added.

Further explaining the feature, Spotify says it will allow listeners to have the option to hear English language commentary from its initial voice model, the company’s own head of Cultural Partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan, for the DJ.

To access the feature via beta, you can find it by opening the Spotify mobile app on either iOS or Android. Once open, head to the Music Feed on Home and tap play on the DJ icon.
