Bluesky crosses 1 million user mark

  • Bluesky has amassed more than one million users in its bid to be a rival to X (formerly Twitter).
  • The social media platform is still not publicly available, with a waitlist system currently in place.
  • It is still well behind Threads in terms of crossing the one million user mark.

Ever since Elon Musk took over Twitter (now X), rival applications for the social media platform have cropped up. First it was Mastodon, then Bluesky, and more recently Threads via Instagram.

While it remains to be seen which of three is indeed a viable competitor to X as Musk continues to ruin the experience on the platform for many, Bluesky recently crossed a significant threshold as it has massed more than one million users.

The platform’s strategy and operations specialist, Rose Wang shared a screenshot of the milestone on X.

While the one million mark is significant for Bluesky, some detractors may not see it as particularly noteworthy, especially as Threads become immensely popular by garnering 30 million sign ups within the first 24 hours of being publicly available, and surpassing 100 million within five days.

Unfortunately, however, Threads has not been able to capitalise on the interest due to a lack of features, leaving many still on the lookout to an alternative to X.

As for the Bluesky milestone, it is worth pointing out that the platform is still not publicly available, and remains a waitlist system for those wanting to gain access. It therefore looks like Bluesky is aiming to create a highly curated community that may be small in comparison to others, but is seemingly more engaged, which is something that Thrrads cannot yet claim to offer due to its distinct lack of functionality and features.

Slow and steady may help it win the race then.

Either way, the true X rival is yet to emerge, but it appears as if it will be between Bluesky and Threads in terms of mounting a significant challenge.
