Cyberpunk 2077 getting free update one week before Phantom Liberty

  • CD Projeckt RED has revealed the availability date of its free Update 2.0 for Cyberpunk 2077.
  • It will be available on 21st September, bringing with it redesign skill trees and perks, vehicle combat, new police system, and more.
  • The update arrives a few days before the highly anticipated Phantom Liberty DLC drops on 26th September.

Those who have played Cyberpunk 2077 in recent months will know it is a far different beast from the mess we received three years ago. To CD Projeckt RED’s credit, the developer has been slowly and finely honing the experience, and later this month, it will release the highly anticipated DLC – Phantom Liberty.

Before 26th September rolls around, however, CD Projeckt RED has a sizeable free update on the cards a few days before Phantom Liberty drops.

Simply called Update 2.0, the free update is set to roll out on 21st September.

Among the many improvements, the free update promises the following:

  • Redesigned skill trees and perks,
  • Revamped cyberware and new capacity system,
  • Vehicle combat and car chases,
  • Combat AI improvements,
  • New police system,
  • UI and UX improvements,
  • Loot, item, and crafting changes,
  • New radio stations.

As for Phantom Liberty, it is a wholly new story, taking players to a new area of Night City called Dogtown, as well as introducing us to Idris Elba as Solomon Reed. The character is, “pitched somewhere between sidekick and mentor for player-character V,” a recent Xbox interview with Elba explained.

“Someone who is really dedicated to his craft, his profession, to his country. But when you meet him, I wouldn’t say it’s a sad story, but it’s a story that’s got its layers, and you meet someone that’s sort of caged in. But when you get into the expansion with Solomon, you get to understand who he is a little bit. He becomes V’s guide, or protector in some cases, and you’re not sure if you can trust him or not,” Elba describes of the former special agent.

Along with introducing a new location, storyline, and characters, it will be interesting to see how V’s story will pick up once again, especially given how the original game ended. As such, what role Johnny Silverhand and the Relic will play, still remains to be seen.

Priced at a relatively affordable R539 on PS5, we’re keen to see what CD Projeckt RED has cooked up for this DLC, especially given its strong history with The Witcher franchise.
