Huawei and Chery tease release of first EV – the Luxeed S7

  • Huawei and Chery have shared some details about an upcoming electric vehicle from the pair in the form of the Luxeed S7.
  • The Luxeed S7 is expected to make its debut in China in November this year.
  • Despite no specifications being shared right now, Huawei and Chery say the Luxeed S7 outperforms the Tesla Model S.

The next time you think about Huawei, it may not be for a smartphone, smartwatch, or notebook. This as the Chinese company continues to branch out into new industries, collaborating with Chery Auto on an upcoming electric vehicle called the Luxeed S7 (pictured above).

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the Luxeed S7 is set to debut in its native China sometime in November, with the pair looking to make an impact within the country’s already competitive EV market.

To that end, executives from the company have been making some serious claims about the upcoming EV.

The head of Huawei’s car division Richard Yu Chengdong has aimed the Luxeed S7 squarely against the Tesla Model S, even going so far as to say that, “It will be superior to Tesla’s Model S in various aspects.”

What aspects he’s referring to remains unclear, but it looks like Huawei and Chery want this new EV to be the go-to electric vehicle for China’s middle class.

“Chery is an automotive powerhouse and Huawei’s strongest partner in developing smart cars so far,” highlighted Gao Shen, an independent analyst in Shanghai, to the SCMP. “High hopes have been pinned on Luxeed because of the marriage between Huawei’s technological clout and Chery’s manufacturing heft,” they added.

As Engadget notes, this is not the first time that Huawei has ventured into the field of EVs, with the company collaborating with another automaker in the form of Seres in 2021, delivering a small handful of EVs in the process.

This partnership with Chery, however, looks to be far larger in scale, although precise expected shipping numbers or cost for the Luxeed S7 have not come to the fore yet. With Chery featuring a presence in South Africa, there may be a chance that the new EV lands locally too, but there has been no confirmation of such at this stage.
