Jim Ryan retiring after 30 years at Sony Interactive Entertainment

  • President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, Jim Ryan, has announced his retirement after 30 years at the company.
  • Ryan will remain in his position until the end of March 2024.
  • No successor has been named yet, but Hiroki Totoki will be appointed in an interim role from April next year.

One of the biggest names in the gaming industry is set to hang up his hat, as President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Jim Ryan, has announced his retirement.

Ryan’s retirement comes after he served for nearly 30 years at Sony Interactive, where he is best known for his work on the PlayStation brand, overseeing the launch and sale of some of the most popular gaming consoles of all time.

“I did not take this decision lightly and I absolutely love SIE and our community, but of late I’ve been finding it increasingly difficult to strike the right balance between having my home in the UK and my job in the United States,” noted Ryan of his decision.

“As mentioned in the press release, I will continue my role as President and CEO until March 2024. Effective April 1, 2024, Hiroki Totoki will be appointed Interim CEO of SIE while he continues his current role at Sony Group Corporation,” he confirmed in a press statement.

As such, he will still be overseeing the day-to-day operations of the business for the next seven months at least.

“The PlayStation business managed by SIE is an essential part of Sony Group’s entire business portfolio. I will work with Jim and the senior management team closely to ensure our continued success and further growth. I am also looking forward to creating the exciting future of PlayStation and the game industry together with everyone at SIE and its business partners,” added Totoki.

2024 is therefore shaping up to be a critical year for SIE and PlayStation in particular, especially as the prospect of Microsoft finally acquiring Activision Blizzard is looking more likely. It will therefore be interesting to see what PlayStation will be like sans Jim Ryan, and how the company will evolve, if at all, moving forward.
