Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 adds two New York boroughs

  • PlayStation held an impromptu State of Play event last night, highlighting the expanded map of New York for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
  • The map now adds two boroughs in the form of Brooklyn and Queens.
  • There are also 65 suits that you’ll be to earn in-game, with more than 200 styling options.

Last night PlayStation held one of its usual State of Play live streamed events, highlighting upcoming exclusive and third-party titles. One of the former was Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is slated for release on 20th October.

To build up even more hype for this highly anticipated sequel, Insomniac Games detailed the expanded version of New York that players will get to explore.

To that end, two boroughs have been added to the map in the form of Queens and Brooklyn. These are the respective homes of Peter Parker and Miles Morales, with the boroughs also featuring some landmarks unique to each of the Spider-Man, such as Midtown High School for Parker and Brooklyn Visions Academy for Morales.

With the first two games in this series already delivering expansive New York maps full of easter eggs and nods to the comic book universe of the webslinger, the addition of two boroughs promising even more to explore.

“Expanding beyond the East River, you’ll swing and soar over iconic landmarks across Queens and Brooklyn – complete with story missions, side quests, and city activities! This expansion also means even faster traversal options such as the Web Wings, which can be combined with traditional web swinging to move at exhilarating speeds,” noted Insomniac Games in a blog post.

“Players will also be able to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales in the open world, near-instantly thanks to the power of the PlayStation 5. Both Spider Heroes are important characters to the grand story we’re telling in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and each will have their own separate side stories to uncover throughout the city,” it added.

The other piece of news from the State of Play is the sheer volume of choices when it comes to different spider costumes you’ll be able to unlock and earn in-game. As we have seen from the Spider-Verse films, the different iterations of Spider-Man are wide-ranging and sometimes a little insane.

For Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, as many as 65 different costumes will be available, and new customisation options open up more than 200 ways to style them.

Those who order the Digital Deluxe Edition of the game, will also get access to 10 exclusive Spidey suits, additional Photo Mode items, and 2 Skill Points, Isomniac Games confirms. Whether that it is worth the R1 539 pre-order price, is up for debate though.

Regardless of which version you opt for, this game is already shaping up to be a GoTY contender, with plenty of pressure being piled on to deliver based on the success of previous releases.
