Stray is being adapted into an animated movie

  • Released last year for the internet’s cat lovers, Stray is now being developed into an animated feature.
  • The studio behind the game, Annapurna Interactive, confirmed that its own animation division will develop the property.
  • Unfortunately no details have been shared as to when it is expected to reach audiences.

Cannot get enough of exploring a neon lit and robot-filled supercity as a cat? Well if you’re wanting more from the world of Stray, 2023’s most notable game involving a cat as the protagonist, you’re in luck as an animated feature is being developed.

According to a release sent out by the publisher of the game, Annapurna Interactive, the film will be handled by one of the company’s other divisions – Annapurna Animation – which counts the likes of Netflix’s Nimona and 2016’s Sausage Party amongst its releases.

Unfortunately we do not have any further details at the time of writing, with it unknown whether the Stray animated film will focus on events before or after the game, or perhaps even mirror the events. As such, it remains to be seen if the studio will use this film to build out a larger universe or deepen the lore before a sequel game is announced.

What is clear, however, is that Annapurna is looking to take more of its game properties and mine them for gaming creations.

As The Verge points out, there is plenty of source material to be inspired by, such as Outer Wilds, 12 Minutes, Kentucky Route Zero, and more. The game division is currently working on Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth, which too could be developed into a companion film, especially given how much the franchise has been used of late.

Either way, if you are a fan of the Stray game that recently became available on Xbox last month, there is more ginger cat-related content on the way.
