The Capitec mobile app is down

  • sers on X have been reporting issues accessing the Capitec mobile banking app, and using USSD codes relating to Capitec.
  • The bank has yet to issue an official update, but thousands have reported an outage on DownDetector.
  • This mirrors an outage that Capitec suffered in 2022 when the banking app was offline for around 40 hours.

The social media team of South African bank Capitec have apologised to customers on X who have said they are experiencing connectivity issues on the Capitec mobile app. The phrase “Capitec” is among the top trends on South Africa’s X this morning as many users have reported to the Capitec account of difficulties gaining access to their bank accounts on mobile.

The bank has yet to issue a formal statement about what exactly is happening, but it has said that it is aware of an issue and that its IT teams are working to fix it. Some users have said that issues logging into the mobile app have existed since the weekend.

On DownDetector.com, users have been reporting a lack of access since around 8 AM, however a huge spike has been seen around 11 AM. DownDetector has seen over 1 500 reports in the last few hours alone.

Many users are posting screenshots of their failed login screens on the mobile app. The screen simply tells them “An unexpected error has occurred.” The app apparently had some unexpected downtime around three hours before the time of writing, but issues seemingly have persisted.

Others have stated that this is a reoccurring problem with Capitec and its mobile app. In 2022, the bank experienced a notable outage that knocked its services offline for around 40 hours. Capitec customers were struggling with USSD services, internet banking and the mobile app then. The bank, one of the largest in South Africa with millions of customers, issued an apology on the then-Twitter.

It seems users are having similar problems with accessing the mobile banking app, and using USSD services. We will monitor the situation and update this article with any relevant communications from Capitec.
