Twitter’s buggy Circles feature set to be scrapped

  • X says that the Circles feature will be no more come 31st October 2023.
  • The feature allowed users to select a small group of followers to see restricted posts.
  • X did not give an explanation for why it was shuttering Circles, but the feature has been buggy for some time.

With barely any explanation, X has announced that it will be getting rid of its Circles feature. Circles is a feature on the social media platform that allows you to select a small group of followers to see your posts.

“X is deprecating Circles as of Oct 31st, 2023. After this date, you will not be able to create new posts that are limited to your Circle, nor will you be able to add people to your Circle,” X says in an official PSA.

After 31st October you will only be able to remove people from your Circle by unfollowing them.

The feature was launched by Twitter, before the platform was purchased by Elon Musk late last year, in August 2022.

TechCrunch reported in April that some posts that were supposed to be restricted to Circles were showing up in the For You feed of some users.

At the time this was believed to be a bug, but a serious one because Circles posts are usually more private and could contain disparaging information you only intended for some of your followers to see.

The feature was apparently buggy for some time, with a possibility that layoffs affected the Twitter/X engineering team, leading to missing support for the feature.

It seems Circles will no longer be a headache for the platform come November. No reason was given by X for the killing of the feature, but it could be a way to make more space for the Communities feature.
