- Winners included TymeBank, which took home the People’s Choice Award.
- Kena Health took home the overall winner prize on the night.
A fixture on the local application developer landscape, last night the MTN Business App of the Year 2023 Awards were held in Johannesburg.
This year’s Awards were particularly significant, according to MTN Business, given the tough economic conditions that many developers are operating in at the moment. As such, the ability to be innovative, while also meeting the needs of South Africans via an app, is highly commendable.
“In its 12th year, the MTN Business App of the Year awards have showcased the vast talent in coding and development in South Africa. Most importantly, it displays that the entrepreneurial spirit that drives innovation is alive and well,” noted Kholofelo Magagane, head of Marketing at MTN Business, while he announced the winners across all the categories at last night’s event.
“The local economy is facing numerous challenges and has not fully emerged from the uncertainty and hardships created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the decision to embark on a journey of entrepreneurship displays the determination of local app developers who have opted to use their skills to create solutions that provide opportunities to enrich the lives of many and contribute to economic growth,” added Magagane.
As for the winners, the big one on the night was Kena Health, which was named the overall winner, as well as taking home the prize in the Health Solution category. For those unfamiliar with Kena Health, it is an app that aims to lower the cost of access to private healthcare by giving patients access to a doctor, nurse, or mental health professional for ~R185 per consult.
Other notable winners on the night include Discovery Bank for Best Consumer Solution, TymeBank for Best Financial Solution, and Pick n Pay ASAP! in the Best Huawei App Gallery category.
