Live-action Zelda movie officially in development

  • Nintendo is officially developing a live-action Legend of Zelda movie.
  • Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the game, confirmed that he is working with producer Avi Arad to bring the live-action project to life.
  • Arad recently produced the Into the Spider-Verse animated films.

Having been rumoured for years now, it is official, Nintendo is indeed developing a live-action Legend of Zelda movie.

The news was confirmed by the game’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, who shared some insight into the project that was later shared by Nintendo Japan on its X (formerly Twitter) account.

Full details for the project, such as when it is expected to reach cinemas, as well as who would be cast in a live-action Zelda movie, remain thin on the ground.

What we do know, however, is that Avi Arad is working with Miyamoto in order to bring this project to life. Arad has a string of hits on his hands, as Miyamoto rightfully points out below, with his most recent work including the Into the Spider-Verse animated films.

As such, it is a promising track record for what will likely be a highly anticipated project. That said, as was the case with the recent Super Mario Bros. animated film, a live-action Zelda movie would net Nintendo a lot of revenue.

As for who will be helming the project, Wes Ball, the director of the Maze Runner franchise has been tapped up.

“The film will be produced by Nintendo and Arad Productions Inc., and directed by Wes Ball. The film will be co-financed by Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., with more than 50% financed by Nintendo. The theatrical distribution of the film will be done worldwide by Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc.,” the company confirmed in a press release.

“By producing visual contents of Nintendo IP by itself, Nintendo is creating new opportunities to have people from around the world to access the world of entertainment which Nintendo has built, through different means apart from its dedicated game consoles,” it added.

It will be interesting to see what direction the film takes, especially from a visual perspective, given how the Zelda games have evolved over the past four decades.
