Showmax relaunches in February 2024

  • Nearly a year after it announced a refresh, Showmax will relaunch in February 2024.
  • The platform will now offer just three different subscriptions including an option to stream Premier League football exclusively.
  • Showmax has yet to share pricing or when precisely this refresh Showmax will launch.

At the beginning of March 2023, MultiChoice announced that Showmax would be evolving thanks to a partnership with NBCUniversal. We’ve been eagerly awaiting more news on this evolution and today we received that news.

Showmax will relaunch in February 2024 with a new look, new app and a new product suite that looks to simplify things a bit more.

This product suite is comprised of three offerings namely:

  • Showmax Entertainment
  • Showmax Entertainment Mobile
  • Showmax Premier League

As for the content slate, the new Showmax will feature Showmax Originals, MultiChoice Originals, as well as content from Universal Pictures, NBC, Peacock, Sky, DreamWorks Animation, HBO, Paramount, Lionsgate, Sony, Warner Bros, BBC, ITV, Telemundo, Banijay, eOne, Fremantle and more. As the platform said in March, the new Showmax will run on the Peacock streaming platform which was used to stream the Super Bowl to six million users per a release from MultiChoice.

“We can’t wait to share the new Showmax,” says chief executive officer of the platform, Marc Jury. “We have an incredibly powerful new technology platform, a bold brand that truly represents our driving spirit, and a content slate that is unmatched. No other streaming service in Africa can offer what Showmax is bringing to the table in the new year.”

Showmax Entertainment is the service we’ve grown accustomed to over the last eight years. This subscription will give you access to content from all of the studios listed above as well as the ability to stream to two devices concurrently, downloads for offline viewing and data saving settings. Maximum resolution is listed as HD by Showmax which seems weak given that HD resolution is 1280 x 720p rather than Full HD (1920 x 1080p) or UHD (3840 x 2160p) which most other streaming platforms offer at a minimum.

Showmax Entertainment Mobile is, as the name implies, a mobile only subscription option. While you get access to all the content it’s at an SD resolution (640 x 480p) with only one concurrent stream. Thankfully downloads are available.

Finally, Showmax Premier League is, as you may have guessed, purely for watching the Premier League football. There is no additional content included in this tier aside from football and only one device can stream content on this tier.

Importantly, MultiChoice hasn’t shared pricing for these new subscription tiers for Showmax. There also isn’t any word on when exactly Showmax will relaunch or whether existing subscribers will have to actively migrate their account.

Hopefully, as we approach this relaunch Showmax will share more information about pricing, account migration (if relevant) and what else we can expect from the platform.
