This year’s best apps on the Apple App Store

  • Apple has announced the nominees for the App Store App of the Year 2023.
  • The best apps on the iOS platform, as well as across Mac, iPadOS and WatchOS are highlighted, with winner announced in a few weeks.
  • AllTrails, Flighty and Duolingo have been nominated for iPhone App of the Year 2023.

At the end of every year Apple puts together nominees to highlight the best apps at its own App Store awards and this year is no different. Last year BeReal, an alternative social network app, took the prize of the iPhone App Store app of the year.

“App Store Editors are recognizing App Store Award finalists — nearly 40 app and game developers across 10 different categories — for their excellence, inventiveness, and technical achievement in apps and games,” explains the App Store editorial team in a statement.

It adds that the selected apps nominated in 2023 have helped users “flex their creativity, challenge themselves, and have fun with family and friends. App Store Award winners will be selected from this year’s outstanding group of finalists.”

This year the three finalists for the lauded iPhone App of the Year awards are:

  • AllTrails – an app that lets you find the best hiking, cycling and walking nature trails.
  • Flighty – a live flight tracker that lets users keep abreast of aeroplane times and airline statuses.
  • Duolingo – the popular language teacher that gamifies and makes it easy to learn many different languages from all over the world, including Afrikaans and Zulu.

The three finalists for iPhone Game of the Year are:

  • Afterplace – a retro RPG game with intuitive controls,
  • Honkai: Star Rail – from the creators of Genshin Impact, a sci-fi adventure with anime-like cinematic action,
  • Vampire Survivors – the new standard in frenetic roguelike action.

Other nominees include:

iPad App of the Year

  • Concepts – create innovative drawing tools and dynamic color palettes,
  • DaVinci Resolve – a more portable video creating experience,
  • Pret-a-Makeup – bring makeup designs to life for beauty enthusiasts.

iPad Game of the Year

  • Eggy Party – a whimsical, joyful experience,
  • Lost in Play – deliverying charming visuals and gameplay for all ages,
  • Pocket City 2 – build a city from your imagination.

Mac App of the Year

  • Linearity Curve – offering innovative design tools for pros and aspiring designers,
  • Photomator – making photo editing faster and simpler,
  • Portal – immersing users in beautiful landscapes and spatial audio.

Mac Game of the Year

  • ELEX II – a sci-fi action adventure,
  • Lies of P – Bloodborne reimagined in the fantasy of Pinocchio,
  • Return to Monkey Island – the classic point-and-click returns for Mac.

Apple Watch App of the Year

  • Planny – helps users stay atop of tasks intelligently,
  • SmartGym – creates smart, targetted workouts at any skill level,
  • Tide Guide – real time marine conditions for sea and beach enthusiasts.

Apple TV App of the Year

  • Bugsnax – a whimsicial adventure, explore Snaktooth Island and solve the island’s mysteries,
  • FitOn – offers a range of workouts with popular trainers and celebrities,
  • MUBI – a quality cinema experience at home for users.

Apple Arcade Game of the Year

  • Cityscapes – build cities with a sustainable and purposeful twist,
  • Hello Kitty Island Adventure – a grand adventure with adorable, classic characters,
  • stitch. – bringing the art of embroidery to more users.

“We are excited about the achievements of these App Store Award finalists who are helping users around the world to explore their interests in drawing, design, video editing, education, music, time management, working out, hiking, playing games, and so much more,” said Phil Schiller, Apple Fellow.

“These finalists are all incredibly talented and have put enormous effort into creating these great apps and games. We are inspired by their accomplishments and look forward to announcing the winners of the App Store Awards later this month.”
