• Uber has formed a partnership with local firm Yassir to add the company’s grocery store services to the Uber Eats app.
• Yassir, based in Johannesburg, offers its own range of delivery services, transportation and payment facilitation products.
• Earlier this month Uber launched Store Pick-ups across South Africa, making it easier for users to get their shopping delivered.

Delivery services have exploded in popularity across South Africa, reaching new heights even as the country reopened after the strict pandemic lockdowns. One of the largest movers and shakers in the space is San Francisco’s Uber, whose Uber Eats branch has now expanded its grocery delivery services by onboarding a local company.

That company is Yassir, known for its Yassir Express delivery service in its own right. Yassir manages a suite of services from its mobile app, including grocery deliveries, transportation and payment services. Uber Eats users can now find the Yassir store on their food delivery app.

According to an announcement sent to Hypertext, only Gauteng users will be able to take advantage of the Yassir/Uber partnership, with more locations across the country to be added in the next year.

“The addition of Yassir stores to the Uber Eats app will provide customers with a diverse array of grocery options at their fingertips,” explains the company in the announcement.

Through the new Yassir stores, Uber users can shop a new catalogue of fresh groceries, convenience, personal care, pet food and more, with over 2 000 grocery products now added to the food delivery app thanks to the partnership between the US and SA companies.

Earlier this month Uber launched store pick-ups across South Africa during its 10-year anniversary festivities. This new feature allows Uber delivery personnel to pick up any pre-bought item from any shop across the country.

Users can access Store Pick-ups on the Uber Eats and the Uber rides app.
