Wokeness is(n’t) ruining videogames

So far 2023 has been a win for videogames what with all the stellar releases that have launched back to back. In true videogame fan fashion, however, the conversation around those games has turned toxic at times, with wokeness being cited as the main culprit.

One point that we see being made again and again by gamers is that games have become too woke as they now feature women, people of colour, members of the LGBTQIA+ community and people with disabilities more prominently.

The most recent example of this discourse that hit the mainstream was centred around Starfield and it’s option to select They/Them pronouns.

In this episode of Hypertext Presents Always Online, we discuss the absurdity of claiming that videogames are too woke, how folks repeating this talking point may simply be blowing a dog whistle and what is really ruining videogames right now.
