How the Galaxy S24 series compares to its predecessors

  • Samsung has officially launched its new Galaxy S24 series.
  • The key difference between this generation and the previous iteration is the introduction of Galaxy AI.
  • Some backwards compatibility is on the way, however.

The AI race on smartphones is on, and Samsung laid down a marker earlier this evening when it unveiled its new Galaxy S24 series that you can read more about here. With the previous generation S23 lineup still fresh in the mind for its impressive performance, we thought it a good a idea to see how the new and relatively old compare.

As has become the case with the iterative nature of new phone releases, from a hardware perspective the two lineups are quite similar. Here the key differences are slightly larger displays and batteries on the base and plus models of S24, while the silicon on the S24 Ultra are what set it apart from the predecessor.

Added to this is Galaxy AI, which is present across the S24 series at launch. That will change, however, as Samsung Mobile South Africa confirmed that backwards compatibility for the new AI-focused features will land on the S23 models. That said, no definitive date has been mention at the time of writing.

Unsurprisingly, the final difference worth noting is price, as the newer models range from between R1 500 to R2 000 more compared to their 2023 counterparts.

A breakdown of the key specifications on both the S24 series and S23 smartphones follow below.
