As the 2023 version of the Matric Exams came to an end in early December, the class of 2023 have had just over a month to decompress and relax as they prepare to embark on a life outside of schooling.

The break will be shortlived, as the Department of Basic Education announced late last year that the results for the end-year exams will be released nationwide on 18th January 2024, with individual results – subject marks – released on the 19th January.

All results and data will be released countrywide after 16:00 on the 19th.

Matric students looking to enter tertiary education can take advantage of the scholarships, bursaries or internships being offered by myriad tech firms this year – you can find some offers here and here.

How to find your 2023 Matric Exams results online

The first place to look for your results on the 18th and 19th will be the official Department of Basic Education website, where you will be able to look up the 2023 Senior Certificate (SC) Exam Results on a quick link on the bottom right of the site.

You will have to input your exam number in order to receive your results so make sure that this number is handy when you go look.

IEB students can find a similar portal on the IEB Schools website. You will have to log in using your exam number and date of birth.

This week, SABC Education, the public broadcaster’s education unit, has partnered with the department to introduce a new swathe of ways matrics can access their exam results digitally after the 19th of January. This includes through SMS, USSD and the MatricsMate App from SABC Education.

Registering with SABC Education on each of these three portals will also put you in the running to win R10 000 in aritime, a bonus to entice students to take advantage of these government-sponsored platforms.

To register for mobile service on SMS:

  • SMS your exam number to 45856,
  • Make sure you have the correct exam number or the system will not be able to verify it,
  • You will be charged R1.50 per SMS,
  • Your exam results will be sent to your phone when they become available.

To register for USSD services:

  • Dial *120*45856# and enter the exam number,
  • You will be charged R1.50 per minute using the service, so move through quickly,
  • Results will be sent to your phone as soon as they are available.

Finally, you can download the MatricsMate app, which is free unlike the two above options. The app can be downloaded via the App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android. On it, you will find an option to get your matric results.

You will need to input your exam number again here, after the 18th and 19th, to get your personal results.

The MatricsMate app can show you your 2023 results, only requiring an exam number.
