Private schools announce IEB matric results for 2023

  • The IEB has today announced its results for the 2023 matric exams, showing off a nearly 99 percent pass rate.
  • At the same time, online assessment board SACAI announced a pass rate of 72 percent for the candidates in its purview.
  • Meanwhile, the Department of Basic Education is set to release its own matric results on Thursday evening.

It’s officially back to school time in South Africa, and ushering in the new academic year are all the examination boards of the country releasing the results for the 2023 matric exams.

While the Department of Basic Education will only announce the results on Thursday evening, other bodies like the Independent Examination Board (IEB) and South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute (SACAI) have announced their own results.

IEB matric exam results for 2023

Matrics that wrote for the IEB in the 2023 national senior certificate exams achieved a general pass rate of 98.46 percent, according to the board. According to Umalusi, 15 211 matrics sat for IEB exams last year, so that would mean that around 234 matrics were unsuccessful.

The IEB issues exams outside of the purview of the government, owing to their independent status. More than half (135) of the 248 schools registered with the IEB, mostly private schools, are located in Gauteng, according to Business Day.

IEB students can find a portal to access their matric results on the IEB Schools website. You will have to log in using your exam number and date of birth.

SACAI announces pass rate for its own exams

Online and distance learning assessment board SACAI has also released its own matric exam results on Thursday. According to the institute, the 2023 end-year exams were a first for the assessment body, and oversaw the matric exams of 5 826 candidates who sat in October and December last year.

The learners who sat for SACAI exams achieved a general pass rate of 72 percent, or around 1 631 learners were unsuccessful. Despite this, SACAI says it is pleased with the results.

“SACAI is proud of its 2023 matric class. We have managed to maintain a 72% pass rate. Despite the increase in the number of candidates that wrote with us, we are just short of a thousand increase of candidates that wrote the SACAI exams,” explained Keith Maseko, SACAI CEO.

According to a release from SACAI, a statement of your results can be obtained at the SACAI NSC designated examination centre or the SACAI Independent school where you wrote your exams.

Additionally, you can log into the SACAI NSC Candidate portal, here, to view your results.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga will announce the pass rate for the 2023 matric exams (national senior certificate) at 18:00 on Thursday. From 19th January, learners will be able to individually access their results transcripts online.

The government will be seeking to improve on the 80.1 percent pass rate the matric class of 2022 scored as credence to their suggestions that basic education has been steadily improving in South Africa.
