• This is the last week to register to rewrite your 2023 matric exams.
• The Second Chance Matric Programme is a way for candidates to rewrite their matric exams and not have to repeat the full year.
• Applications close on 9th February 2024.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says that applications to register to rewrite your matric exams in the Second Chance Matric programme will close this week on 9th February 2024.

Candidates that wish to rewrite their exams in May and June this year must apply before that date or they will miss their shot and have to resort to other means, like possibly repeating the entire matric year.

“The programme plays an important role in retaining learners beyond the formal schooling programme. Learners who are disappointed by their failure or poor performance at the end of their schooling career, are able to continue with their studies at their own pace,” said DBE minister Angie Motshekga last year.

While the class of 2023 achieved a particularly high pass rate, there were still numerous learners that did not manage or were not happy with their marks. The Second Chance Matric programme is an opportunity to either rewrite your final exams without having to repeat the entire year, or to increase the marks of certain exams – for example, if you need higher marks for certain university entrance requirements.

If you apply for a Second Chance, you will have to choose your worst subjects to rewrite, and you will have to choose two or more. The programme is more than just the opportunity to rewrite the exams, it is also a way to get extra help from DBE. Candidates can take advantage of face-to-face learning centres and online support that offers a wide range of learning material.

Subjects that learners can register for include:

• Accounting,
• Agricultural Science,
• Business Studies,
• Economics,
• English First Additional Language,
• Geography,
• History,
• Mathematics,
• Mathematic Literacy,
• Physical Sciences,
• and Life Sciences.

To begin registering for the programme online go to www.eservices.gov.za or visit any DBE office with an ID document and statement of results.

You will have to make an eServices account first, and then head to Education, and then “June Registration for Senior Certificate.” Make sure to keep personal details close at hand, like your ID number and your school information/examination number from last year.
