Disney and MultiChoice renew deal, which channels remain

  • The Walt Disney Company Africa and MultiChoice Group have signed a multi-year distribution deal.
  • The renewal sees Disney-owned linear channels remain on DStv until 2027.
  • The channels in question are National Geographic, National Geographic Wild, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, ESPN, and ESPN 2.

There have been several machinations at MultiChoice to kick off the new year, but while the entertainment company looks for a better deal to purchase from Canal+, it has renewed its deal with The Walt Disney Company Africa.

To that end, the pair have announced a multi-year distribution deal for Disney’s portfolio of linear channels on DStv until 2027.

This means that National Geographic, National Geographic Wild, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, ESPN, and ESPN 2 will continue to be available on DStv for the next four years.

“This distribution renewal ensures that we will be able to continue bringing our six 24-hour channels to audiences across the continent and marks another proud milestone in our long-term relationship with the MultiChoice Group,” noted Christine Service, SVP and GM of The Walt Disney Company Africa.

“With a strong foundation of creativity, story-telling, exploration and multi-generational emotional connection, we are proud to continue offering DStv viewers the very latest from our high-quality, premium kids, factual and sports content,” she enthused in a release shared with Hypertext.

As for the different DStv packages that the Disney-owned channels will be available on, MultiChoice advised the following:

  • National Geographic – Compact and up,
  • National Geographic Wild – Access and up,
  • Disney Channel – Compact and up,
  • Disney Junior – Access and up,
  • ESPN – Compact and up,
  • ESPN 2 – Access and up.

“Extending our Partnership with The Walt Disney Company and the incredible linear channels on DStv elevate our offering and amplifies the joy of entertainment,” added Nomsa Philiso, CEO for General Entertainment at MultiChoice South Africa.
