February PS Plus games see launch of latest Square Enix title

  • Foamstars is launching exclusively through PlayStation Plus as the headlining game for February.
  • Other free-of-charge games for subscribers this month include Rollerdrome and Steelrising.
  • New Fall Guys skins are also on offer for subscribers based on Ratchet & Clank and Horizon Forbidden West.

In a rare decision, Sony is launching a brand new game alongside its “free” games for PlayStation (PS) Plus subscribers this February. That game is the Splatoon-like multiplayer game Foamstars. The game’s release date was revealed during the latest State of Play held this week.

This month’s PS Plus games, together with Foamstars, are a “potent mix of skates and gunplay with the highly stylish Rollerdrome, while Steelrising brings you automaton-powered RPG action,” as Adam Michel, Sony Interactive Director for Content Acquisition and Operations, describes in an official blog post.

All three games will be available at no extra charge for PS Plus subscribers from 6th February until 4th March 2024.

Headlining this month is Foamstars, from Final Fantasy developer Square Enix.

Launching exclusively through PS Plus, this is a four vs. four multiplayer third-person “party” shooter. In the guise of Nintendo’s Splatoon, where the player’s firing alters the environment, Foamstars can use foam to build obstacles, create slippery surfaces, help defend from enemy attacks and create vantage points.

There’s a large cast of colourful characters to choose from and loads of different game modes. The game is available on both the PlayStation 4 and 5.

Up next for both consoles as well is third-person shooter Rollerdrome.

In Rollerdrome style is the name of the game. Imagine Tony Hawk’s Underground and John Woo’s Stranglehold had a lovechild – this is that child. Skate across an arena as you stylishly murder your opponents with slick bullet-time action

“Dominate with style in this intense shooter-skater hybrid, where kills grant health and nailing tricks provide you with ammunition. Will you have what it takes to become the next Rollerdrome Champion?” Sony explains.

Finally, only for PlayStation 5s is Steelrising, a Souls-inspired action RPG set in aristocratic techno-France amid the Revolution. This one looks like a toughie.

“Fight and explore through the streets, rooftops, neighborhoods and castles as Aegis, a mysterious automaton masterpiece. Engage in ruthless and intense fights against technological marvels that are as complex as they are unforgiving,” the company says of the third game rounding out February’s offering to subscribers.

Aegis is a robot, and you equip her with myriad interesting weapons and skills as you battle the killer robots of Louis XVI. A beautiful art style and merciless combat await you in this one.

PlayStation has also launched Fall Guys icon packs, with many icons themed on characters from the company’s exclusive games Ratchet & Clank and Horizon Forbidden West. You can find these packs and the monthly games right on the PlayStation Store.

Also starting 6th February, Sony is offering a free trial of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PS Plus Premium and Deluxe members. You can play one of last year’s best games for two hours as part of a Valentine’s special. Not sure how much you will manage in those two hours, but the offer is there.
