Intelsat to modernise Openserve’s local infrastructure

  • Intelsat has announced that Openserve has renewed and expanded the pair’s longstanding relationship.
  • As part of the renewal, Intelsat will modernise 900 Openserve sites across South Africa.
  • The expansion will also include new hardware and satellite connectivity.

This week a number of new deals have been struck between telecommunication service providers at MWC 24, but this latest announcement comes in the form of a renewal between Openserve and Intelsat.

It sees the pair continue their longstanding relationship, with the Telkom subsidiary set to receive an upgrade to its existing local network infrastructure. More specifically, Intelsat will be rolling out new hardware and satellite connectivity for Openserve in a bid to deliver more reliable service around the country.

As part of the project, Intelsat says it will modernise more than 900 sites for Openserve, which boasts the largest fixed broadband network in the country.

“The project will improve performance of the network and help deliver higher throughputs to end customers at a lower cost. This improved performance and modernization will enhance services to businesses, organizations and communities in the hard-to-reach areas,” the multinational satellite service provider explained in a release shared with Hypertext.

While it remains to be seen if the country-wide upgrades will indeed lead to lower pricing for consumers, the wait to see what impact the moderation will have will not take long. This as the process is already underway, and on track to be completed by the end of June this year.

“Through this renewed collaboration, Openserve will modernize its network infrastructure and tap into Intelsat’s advanced technology and global network, to deliver enhanced, highly reliable and dependable connectivity solutions that meet the evolving demands of enterprises, governments, businesses and communities across South Africa,” enthused Rhys Morgan, regional VP for EMEA sales at Intelsat.
