  • OPPO has launched a new smartphone in South Africa in the form of the A79 5G.
  • The mid-range device is on sale in SA from today in two colour options – Dazzling Purple and Mystery Black.
  • Key features include a 6.72″ display, 8GB RAM, 5 000mAh battery, and 5G support.

Last week saw a number of new smartphones land locally, and not to be outdone, OPPO has unveiled its latest offering in the form of the A79 5G.

As the name suggests, this premium mid-range device supports 5G connectivity, which is not something that all phone makers can claim in this category.

The new device is available to purchase in South Africa from today onwards, with two colour options on offer for local consumers – Dazzling Purple (pictured below) and Mystery Black.

Before we detail pricing, let’s see what this new mid-range smartphone is packing.

Up front is a large 6.72″ FullHD+ display (2400×1080), with a punch hole housing an 8MP selfie camera up front. Sticking on the camera side of things, on the rear, a pair of lenses is found with a 50MP primary and 2MP secondary lenses taking care of the photography.

Internally a MediaTek MT6833 processor is doing the heavy lifting, along with providing the aforementioned 5G connectivity. Added to this is 8GB of RAM and 128GB onboard storage.

Powering the device is a substantial 5 000mAh unit, which supports 33W SUPERVOOC charging that can yield 51 percent battery life from zero in up to 30 minutes of charging. A quick five-minute charge can serve up to 2.6 hours of calls, according to OPPO.

Last worth mentioning is that the A79 5G has been given a 36-month Fluency Rating by OPPO. For those unfamiliar with the rating, which included us before reading up about it, it essentially means the standard of performance will not diminish for 36 months after purchase, so speed of the phone and its multitasking capabilities are guaranteed for around three years.

As for how much the A79 5G will cost you, the recommended retail price is R7 999.
