Samsung debuts Galaxy A55 5G and A35 5G with larger displays

  • Samsung has unveiled the 2024 iterations of its mid-range Galaxy A series, with new models of A55 5G and A35 5G smartphone.
  • Both devices feature 6.6″ FullHD+ screens with 120Hz refresh rates.
  • The pair also have access to Samsung Knox Vault for the first time.

In recent years the Galaxy A series from Samsung have set the standard in terms of well-specced mid-range options at an affordable price point. For 2024, the South Korean firm has debuted its latest iteration of Galaxy A55 5G and A35 5G.

So what are the latest options sporting?

In terms of specifications, it is the larger displays that are stealing the show here, with each new Galaxy A phone boasting a 6.6″ FullHD+ (2220×1800) screens with variable refresh rates up to 120Hz. Added to this is a feature called Vision Booster, which adjusts the tone of the display based on the ambient lighting conditions.

Shifting to the internals of the devices, both phones are powered by Exynos chipsets, although Samsung has not listed which ones. According to Android Police, the Exynos 1480 is present on the Galaxy A55 and Exynos 1380 is found on the A35.

While both house a large 5 000mAh battery, the RAM configurations are different. Here the A55 comes in either 8GB or 12GB flavours, with up to 256GB of onboard storage. As for the slightly lesser specced A35, 6GB or 8GB RAM options are found, as well as up to 256GB storage.

There is a difference too in terms of the camera setups, although both have a trio of lenses on the rear. The A55 has a larger lens ultra-wide angle option, with the same going for the front facing selfie camera.

Those hoping for Galaxy AI are out of luck at this stage, with no mention of the AI-enabled suite of features being present on the 2024 A series. For now, it is only the newer Galaxy S and foldable Galaxy Z models that have access, so it remains to be seen whether the internal hardware will allow Galaxy Ai to be rolled out to this lineup down the line.

While Galaxy AI is still in the offing, Samsung has highlighted the security features on the A55 and A35. “This year, Samsung is bringing one of its most innovative flagship security features, Samsung Knox Vault, to Galaxy A series users for the very first time,” the company confirmed in a press release.

“It can help protect the most critical data on a device, including lock screen credentials, such as PIN codes, passwords and patterns. Samsung Knox Vault also protects device encryption keys, encrypting users’ private data stored in the device. Only a user who has the correct lock screen credentials can access their data, even if the device is lost or stolen,” it added.

At the time of writing, local availability and pricing are yet to be confirmed for the new Galaxy A55 5G and A35 5G, but both devices are expected to be made available in SA in the coming weeks.
