WC 2025 Grade 1 and Grade 8 registrations near deadline

  • The Western Cape Education MEC says that parents should register their new Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners for 2025 sooner rather than later.
  • This as the application window of the province for 2025 ends on 12th April 2024.
  • Parents must include a host of certified documentation when applying online.

The Western Cape online admissions window for the 2025 school year is set to close for registrations on 12th April 2024 at 23:59, so parents just have under a month’s time to apply for their children to get into Grade 1 and Grade 8 for 2025.

According to Western Cape Education MEC David Meynier, the province has already received 59 510 Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications for next year.

“Last year, we received over 125 000 Grade 1 and 8 applications, so we appeal to the parents of roughly 65 000 learners who still need to apply to do so immediately. Receiving all the applications on time will make a big difference to our planning and preparations for 2025,” the MEC says.

According to the MEC, the following certified documents will be required for all applications:

  • The last official report card for the learner,
  • Proofs of identity, including ID, birth certificate or passport of learner,
  • In the case of a foreign learner: a passport, or a study permit or proof of application for a study permit, or a copy of the parent’s Asylum seeker or Refugee Permit or police affidavit that documents are not available,
  • Immunisation card for primary school learners,
  • Proof of residence.

Importantly, any documentation supplied on online portals or handed in person must be certified.

“You can certify copies of your documents at any police station or post office. Keep these copies together, as you will need to submit the hard copies later this year to the final school your child is accepted to,” explains Maynier.

The Western Cape has over 120 pop-up admission sites for in-person hand-ins available at shopping malls, schools and other facilities, across all 8 education districts, Maynier adds.

For parents in other provinces: it is important to note that each province will open admissions at different times during the year. They will also have distinct online processes for registrations of Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners. Some provinces do not have online admissions available such as the North West province last year.

The process of registering new primary school and high school learners each year is a confusing and intensive one. Last year saw 757 075 new learners during the course of the registration. Hypertext will have the latest information for parents ahead of each provincial deadline.
