2024’s first big Apple event: everything you need to know

  • Apple is hosting an event on 7th May 2024, the company’s first showcase of the year.
  • Titled “Let Loose,” promo material hints at a new Apple Pencil, which means the iPad will be the focus of the event.
  • Like other Apple events, Let Loose will be streamed virtually at 16:00 CAT on the 7th.

Apple CEO Tim Cook posted to social media yesterday afternoon that a new Apple Event is on the horizon, hinting with the posts that it will focus on the new Apple Pencil and by extension, new iPads.

The event will be hosted virtually on Apple’s digital channels on 7th May 2024, with streaming set to start at 10:00 ET, or 16:00 CAT for South African viewers. It will likely be streamed on Apple’s website (Apple.com) and its official YouTube channel, as well on official social media channels the day of. We will have more information on how you can watch the event closer to the date.

It is pretty obvious from the promo material that a new Apple Pencil will be introduced. The last time we heard anything about an Apple-flavoured stylus was in November 2022, when rumours suggested that the company was working on a new Apple Pencil similar to the Samsung S Pen. We even had a price at $49.

The rumour also suggested that the Pencil would be compatible with iPhones, which is still a possibility and maybe why Apple is using the Pencil as the main hint and not something specifically about iPads.

Apple already sells styluses for iPads, so the new Apple Pencil, in its third generation, would have to be doing something different and perhaps functionality with iPhones could be the ticket.

While nothing else has been revealed by the Cupertino Tech Empire, rumours also suggest that a new iPad Pro will be introduced at the event, with significant improvements including Apple’s latest chipsets and perhaps AI capabilities, as well as an OLED display.

Of course, with an iPad Pro it is likely we will also see a refreshed iPad Air, and other accessories for the devices, like a new aluminium Magic Keyboard.

Lastly, and this is a long shot, but we also have a rumour from usually correct tipster Ming-Chi Kuo from January that Apple is working on a foldable iPad, similar to a foldable smartphone. Kuo said at the time that the device would go into mass production in the first quarter of 2024. Guess which quarter we’re in now?
