How to setup an Uber for teens account

Uber for teens has now launched in South Africa, with the new feature servicing all parts of the country as a way for parents and guardians to better organise trips for their children. The new feature also has a few other uses, but always starts with a parent or guardian setting up an Uber for teens account and onboarding their child with their own unique profile.

Along with tying an account to a guardian’s profile, Uber for teens comes with a number of features including live trip tracking, encrypted audio recordings, anonymisation of phone numbers, being able to share your journey with others, only using highly rated drivers, and more.

The option to onboard a teen should appear in your Uber app either today or over the coming days.

For those wanting to create a teen profile, the steps to do so are as follows:

  1. Log in to your Uber app.
  2. Tap on Account, and then Family and Teens to create a Family profile.
  3. Tap Invite family, then Teen, then Choose Contact, and select their name from your phone’s contacts.
  4. Once the profile is created, make sure your payment information is up to date before your teen requests their first ride.

It is important to note that this feature will request their date of birth as this feature is only for users aged 13 to 17.

“Teen accounts are built with transparency in mind so that there are no surprises for parents, teens, or drivers. We’re thrilled to offer this innovative feature to families in South Africa, with key safety features built into the heart of the experience,” enthused Kagiso Khaole, general manager, Uber Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Whether their teen is getting a ride to an internship or heading home after football practice, parents will receive real-time notifications and can follow along with live trip tracking every step of the way. We’re committed to helping keep teens safe and getting families moving,” he added in a release shared with Hypertext.
