Loadshedding suspension continues for the rest of the week

  • Eskom has announced that loadshedding will remain suspended for the remainder of the week.
  • This means Eskom has managed to keep power cuts at bay for the last seven days and it has met the demand of South African customers.
  • The utility says it will provide an update on Friday or as soon as one is needed.

Good news coming out of Eskom this afternoon, loadshedding will remain suspended until at least Friday, according to forecasts from the utility.

This comes after Eskom suspended loadshedding on 27th March ahead of the Easter long weekend. The utility intended for loadshedding to return on Sunday but, thanks to improved generation, power cuts were suspended.

Since then South Africans have waited for the other shoe to drop but it hasn’t. The fact of the matter is that Eskom is generating enough power to meet demand. In fact, it’s generating an excess of electricity. As of Monday, Eskom reported it had 27 077MW available while demand sat at around 24 992MW.

Interestingly, as much as 1 546MW – or a stage and a half of loadshedding – comes from renewable energy sources.

Eskom anticipates that demand will be higher this evening – 27 465MW – but it seemingly has enough capacity to sustain that demand.

With that having been said, South Africans are well versed in loadshedding rapidly moving from suspended to full-on power cuts lasting 12 hours a day so many are tentative about how long this will last.

Until then, the power stays on. Just be aware that Eskom’s tariffs have increased so you may end up paying more for your electricity, especially now that it’s staying on for the foreseeable future.

The utility says it will provide an update on Friday, or as soon as an update is warranted.
