  • The 18 vehicles competing for SA Car of the Year 2024 have completed their gruelling testing.
  • South African motorists are also being urged to vote for their pick of Car of the Year, with the chance to win access to a defensive driving course available.
  • The 2024 SA Car of the Year will be announced at an event on 8th May.

The South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ) have completed the rigorous testing for this year’s SA Car of the Year (COTY) competition. The winner for the coveted 2024 edition will be announced at an event on 8th May.

While voting for the official winner will involve the input of 27 jurors, all of whom tested the 18 vehicles being considered for SA Car of the Year, the competition’s sponsor Old Mutual Insure is asking local motorists to share their thoughts too.

As such, they’re being invited to vote as part of the Motor Enthusiast Competition, where five MasterDrive defensive driving vouchers valued at R1 990 each are up for grabs.

“All you need to do to seize this opportunity is cast your vote for your favourite COTY finalist, complete the form below, and who knows? You might find yourself cruising the streets as a more skilled and confident driver. Don’t miss out on this electrifying chance to revamp your driving prowess,” reads the voting landing page.

The vehicles competing in this year’s COTY are as follows:

  • Citroen C3,
  • Suzuki Fronx,
  • Omoda C5,
  • Suzuki Grand Vitara,
  • Toyota Urban Cruiser,
  • BMW X1,
  • GWM Ora 03,
  • Lexus NX,
  • Mercedes-Benz GLC,
  • BMW 7 Series,
  • Mercedes-Benz EQS,
  • Volkswagen Amarok,
  • Lexus LX,
  • Mahindra Scorpio N,
  • BMW M2,
  • Ford Ranger Raptor,
  • Honda Civic Type R,
  • Toyota Corolla GR.

“We cherish the test days when seasoned journalists converge to offer their expert insights on the finalists vying for top honours in their categories and selecting the overall competition winner,” noted Mabuyane Mabuza, chairperson of the 2023 and 2024 COTY Committee and vice-chairperson of the SAGMJ.

“The field of contenders is diverse, ranging across eight categories. From affordable compacts to sensible family offerings, ultra-luxurious saloons and snarling performance vehicles, the line-up is representative of the breadth of the new car market in South Africa. But there can only be one 2024 Car of the Year,” added the SAGMJ in a release shared with Hypertext.
