Destiny 2 Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, and The Witch Queen all free to play until June

  • Bungie has given all Destiny 2 players access to three major expansions.
  • Until 3rd June all players can access and keep weapons and gear – including Exotics – from Shadowkeep, Beyond Light and The Witch Queen.
  • In addition, all Seasonal content from the last year will be available to all players.

Before Bungie wraps up its Light versus Darkness storyline in Destiny 2, the developer is giving all players open access to the last three years of content.

As of Tuesday evening, the mainline expansions for Destiny 2 will be free to play until 3rd June. This includes the Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, and The Witch Queen expansions. This open access includes the ability to earn weapons and armour from these expansions, Exotics and even dive into the Raids launched alongside those expansions. It’s not clear whether this includes access to the Dungeons but since they aren’t explicitly mentioned, we suspect they aren’t included.

However, Seasonal Content from the last year will be available to all players. That means you can play the activities related to Season of Defiance (meh), Season of the Deep (great story, meh gear), Season of the Witch (great story, middling gear) and Season of the Wish (best gear, best story). This includes The Coil – the best seasonal activity since Season of Opulence, Deep Dives and more.

Of the three expansions now available we recommend powering through Shadowkeep and Beyond Light but savouring The Witch Queen. To date, The Witch Queen is among the best expansions released for Destiny 2, overshadowed only by Forsaken. While it’s disappointing that Lightfall isn’t included for all players, PlayStation Plus subscribers can access that expansion this month as part of their subscription.

These expansions are only available until 3rd June which isn’t a lot of time but it’s enough to grind out the gear you want, which Bungie says players will be able to keep after 3rd June. We should however mention that, usually, Bungie takes Destiny 2 offline for 24 hours before a major expansion launches so players will only be able to take advantage of this free content until 2nd June, if past habits remain in place.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape launches for Xbox, PlayStation and PC on 4th June. There is currently a special promotion for the expansion on PlayStation Store, Xbox Store and Epic Games Store with the same promotion expected to land on Steam on 21st May.
